Removing an Underground Oil Tank in Connecticut

CT Oil Tank Removal

Underground oil tank removal is a complex project that requires the knowledge and expertise of professionals who will follow the appropriate steps and comply with all local, state and federal regulations. In most areas, local permits and an inspection by the Fire Marshall are required before the process of removal can even begin. All underground utilities (including water, gas, electric, sewer, etc.) must be identified and marked off beforehand to ensure that the tank is safely excavated and that the right equipment is acquired. Only after these steps have been taken can the ground be broken to excavate the tank.

Oil Tank Removal Process

The actual process of removing the tank involves:

  • digging it out of the ground
  • cleaning inside it including removing any liquids or sludge and recycling it in accordance with EPA regulations
  • plugging and sealing any oil lines connected to the tank
  • removing breather tubes
  • testing the surrounding soil to ensure it has not been contaminated
  • recycling the tank in accordance with local, state and federal regulations

If testing reveals that the soil is contaminated, the process of remediation must begin. If the soil is uncontaminated, the area can be backfilled and covered with sod or seeded.

Safe Disposal of Underground Oil Tanks

You can count on us at R&R Landscaping & Tank Removal to follow all of these necessary steps to safely remove your underground tank. We take care of all of the necessary paperwork and permits, use a state certified laboratory for Certified Extractable Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (ETPH) soil testing, and properly dispose of the underground tank. We provide all of our customers with a certified Closure Letter at the end of the project documenting the tank removal process and results for you to share with your insurance company, lender or potential buyer. If contamination is discovered, we are equipped and qualified to complete the remediation process which will address the pollution problem and stop it from spreading.
